Cape Ai-Todor is located near the village of Gaspra, on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula. It is on Cape Ai-Todor that one of the most famous attractions of Crimea is located - Swallow's Nest.

Geographic coordinates of Cape Ai-Todor on the map of Crimea GPS N 44.429651, E 34.127911.

Like most of Crimea, it was formed 160 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Cape Ai-Todor was formed under the influence of a tectonic fault, which began approximately from Balaklava and ended near Feodosia. After the formation of the Crimean Mountains and their gradual cooling, wind and sea completed the formation of the coastal zone. So Cape Ai-Todor was divided into three parts, which is why it is sometimes called the trident of Poseidon. The first part of the cape is called Limen-Burun, the second Monastery-Burun and the third Ai-Todor.

History of the habitat of Cape Ai-Todor man began before our era, as evidenced by archaeological excavations carried out in this area. The Tauri are considered to be the first inhabitants, but in the 6th-4th centuries BC there are household items and tools that most likely belong to primitive people and their ancestors. In the first century AD, the Romans landed on Cape Ai-Todor, who arrived at the request of the Greeks living in Chersonesos. The Roman landing was supposed to strengthen the eastern borders of the Crimean Peninsula and stop the constant invasions of nomads and Taurians. Roman legionaries built a fortress on the cape. In history, the name of the fortress was lost and in the 19th century the name Charaks appeared, which literally translates from Greek as “fortress” or “fortification.”
In the 5th century there was a Ai-Todor Church was built, translated from Greek as Saint Peter. It was she who gave the name to the cape, which has survived to this day. The Ai-Todor Church was finally destroyed during the capture of Crimea by the Turks. Now all that remains is the foundation. It was located on the Monastery-Burun spur.

After the capture by the Turks it was practically uninhabited. There was no fresh water and the vegetation was rather sparse.
The heyday of the cape came with the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire, after the Russian-Turkish wars. The southern coast of Crimea began to be intensively upset; many merchants and landowners began to buy plots for palaces, estates and summer cottages.

With the development of the southern coast of Crimea, an urgent need arose for the arrangement of not only land life, but also navigation. So in the 19th century, one of the first lighthouses of Crimea appeared on Cape Ai-Todor. The Ai-Todor lighthouse is still in operation and performs its service regularly.
Perhaps the culmination of architecture today at Cape Ai-Todor was the construction of one of the most famous palaces in Crimea and throughout Russia - the Swallow's Nest Palace.

At the end of the 19th century, this amazing and fabulous castle appeared on Aurora Rock, which from the first years made Cape Ai-Todor one of the most visited places on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula.
When you go to Crimea on vacation, you will definitely visit Cape Ai-Todor with him

Cape Ai-Todor has been a natural monument since 1964. The name Ai-Todor means “Saint Fedor” in Greek. Cape Ai-Todor consists of three rocky spurs, forming an almost inaccessible massif from the sea. Its southernmost tooth is the Ai-Todor spur itself - the highest part of the cape.

In the early Middle Ages, the monastery of St. Fedor stood here, which gave the name to the cape. Only a small cove with a beach provides the only convenient pier. The remains of the Roman military camp Charax, which existed in the 1st-3rd centuries, have been preserved.

In 1835, with the participation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Black Sea Fleet M.P. Lazarev, the Ai-Todor lighthouse was founded on the southernmost spur of the cape, which is still in operation and is one of the oldest lighthouses of the Black Sea.

The left (eastern) spur of the cape is called Limen-Burun (cape of the harbor from Greek), at its foot there is the Parus rock. The middle spur is the Burun Monastery, where the Aurorina rock is located with a beautiful castle “” on the top. The western spur is Cape Kharaks, the famous estate of the Romanovs.

The first (left), eastern spur of Cape Ai-Todor is not without reason called Limen-Burun. "Estuary" in Greek - bay, bay, harbor cape. It is easily recognized by the rocky island - the Parus rock - standing in front of it in the sea. Only slightly protruding into the sea, Limen-Burun, however, has all the features of the southern coastal capes: hard rocks (Middle Jurassic limestones), steep steep slopes, a juniper grove above them - the remains of ancient coastal forests of a relict tree, the most valuable in the Crimea. It is juniper that, first of all, owes its healing climate. A one-hectare grove of these trees can purify the air of a large industrial city.

At the top of Cape Limen-Burun (82 m) there is a viewing platform “Captain's Bridge”, hanging over the abyss, from which, as from the bridge of an ocean liner, a wide panorama of the Crimean coast opens. Everyone who has been here seems to find themselves in the kingdom of sea and stone and is ready to admire the coast for hours. A little lower there is a sculpture of an eagle; there are always a lot of seagulls and cormorants here.

In front of the Limen-Burun spur, the Parus rock rises into the sea. At the very top of the spur there is a sculpture of an eagle; there are always a lot of seagulls and cormorants.

The Parus rock is a part of Cape Limen-Burun, which broke off during an earthquake in 1927. For some time, the rock was connected to the cape by an isthmus, but after its destruction it became a separate rock in the Black Sea. The rock got its name because of its incredible resemblance to a sailboat, alone in the entire sea and as if petrified for centuries.

The sail has withstood the formidable attacks of the sea for centuries, such stability is due to the especially strong rock (marble-like limestone) from which it is composed.

Brave divers jump from cliffs into the sea, but such jumps are very dangerous. Despite the danger, people from all over Crimea come to Parus to dive.

The rock itself is covered in legends and beliefs. The Crimean Parus has a twin brother in the Krasnodar Territory, in the Gelendzhik region. Only the Krasnodar stone sailboat seems to have moored to the shore - one side of it sinks into the water, and the other approaches the shore and is surrounded by a pebble beach; it is flatter and its thickness is about 1 meter.

The middle spur of Cape Ai-Todor, the so-called Monastyrsky, or Monastery-Burun, is, as it should be, in the middle. It has another name - Aurorina Rock. Here, at the very top of the Aurora rock, named after the ancient Roman goddess of the dawn, there is a Gothic castle - Swallow's Nest.

The true history of the Swallow's Nest is little known and is therefore intertwined with legends. But when we are talking about a romantic castle, when we long for a miracle, even a small one, the legend may turn out to be truer, more natural than random life events.

From the sea side, at the foot of the Aurora Rock, you can find several underwater caves and even dive there, lighting the way with a waterproof lantern. Popularity and even fame were given to these places by the episodes of the long-standing, unforgettable film “Amphibian Man” filmed here. The lair of the “sea devil” Ichthyander was located precisely under this rock. And 15 years later, Stanislav Govorukhin filmed “Ten Little Indians” in the same rocks.

The western spur of Cape Ai-Todor is called Cape Kharaks. The southernmost spur - Cape Ai-Todor, the Kharaks spur - the highest part of the cape. Since ancient times, it has served as a landmark on the path of sailors. Returning from his “walk across the three seas”, the famous traveler Afanasy Nikitin rounded this cape on the way from to in the 15th century.

In 1835, a lighthouse was built at the top of the spur. The lighthouse stands at the highest point - at an altitude of 156 m. Its light is visible at 27 nautical miles. Not far from the lighthouse, the remains of a century-old south-coast forest have been preserved: thickets of tall juniper, keva tree, downy oak, etc. Strong winds, usual for these places, gave the crowns of the local trees a flag-like shape.

Of greatest interest is the giant thousand-year-old keva tree growing at the very top, near the lighthouse, which is included in the Red Book of Ukraine. This is one of the oldest trees in Crimea.

In the 1st century AD e. The Roman conquerors built their fortress Charax on the cape. This is evidenced by the remains of stone walls and towers, numerous household items and fragments of military armor found on Ai-Todor by archaeologists.
