Besides architecture, jamon and sangria, Spain has at least 579 more trump cards. This is how many beaches in the country have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award. This means that most of the Spanish coastline is clean, safe and well-maintained.
In the capital of Catalonia, there are 7 of 10 such beaches, and all of them are a priori designated as the best beaches in Barcelona. However, the other 3 are also not lagging behind; earlier, a flag of the color of the sky fluttered over them.
We went through Barcelona's seaside holiday destinations and made our own rating! We did this in 2016 and 2018. The photo was taken in the morning, so there may be many fewer people than during the day :)
Our top starts from San Sebastia beach. But first we will talk about Barceloneta, because... it is the most popular.
Note that for us it is in the LAST position in the ranking of beaches.
You will either fall in love with Barceloneta at first sight, or you will be inflamed with contempt and, after lying on the sand for an hour or two, run to look for another place. 🙂 This is a real city beach in Barcelona, the oldest and most visited. Can we call it one of the top ones? Yes and no:
- The location is excellent, with a wide beautiful promenade, 20 minutes walk from La Rambla.
- It has a scattering of cool restaurants, cafes and bars, which in the evenings turn into a center of nightlife.
- It is cleared of debris daily and the Blue Flag is renewed annually.
- Meets all the needs of people with limited mobility; there is a special group of volunteers providing assistance with bathing.
There are probably more negative aspects. In Barcelona, Barceloneta Beach is not just famous, but incredibly popular! It attracts both local residents and newly arrived tourists like a magnet. Lying/sitting/standing bodies 20 centimeters apart is a typical situation at the height of the season. By the way, our photo was taken in the morning. Do you see how many people there are already?
Therefore, this is not the cleanest beach in the city. Yes, garbage is collected and removed regularly, but it is unrealistic to cope with so many people of cigarette butts, wrappers, and bottles. In addition, the sea can also be dirty. When we found ourselves in Barceloneta for the first (and last) time, we didn’t decide to go for a swim right away, because... some labels, cigarettes, leaves floated in the water; There were large stones at the entrance.
And it would seem that you have managed to relax, abstract yourself from the hubbub around and finally indulge in the Barcelona sun... when another businessman barks in your ear with an offer of beer or a towel! There are a lot of traders on Barceloneta, and there is no peace from them. In principle, as well as from partially or completely naked people. Spain is a country of free morals. 🙂
In terms of facilities, there are toilets, showers, changing cabins, lockers for storing things (you should try to find the last two items), but their condition is not always impeccable. There are special workout areas where real macho men flex their muscles, there are paths for cyclists and skaters on the embankment (you can rent them on the beach), there is a children's playground and a place for beach volleyball. Wi-Fi is mediocre.
In general, our impressions, like the reviews of most tourists, are as follows: Barceloneta beach is clearly overrated. Rather, this is a place for party people and those who like to be in a crowd. If you come here not to sunbathe, but, say, to sit in a cafe overlooking the sea or take an evening stroll along the embankment, then this is an excellent option.
How to get there:
- by metro – line L4 to station. Barceloneta + 13 min walk
- by bus – D20, 59, 45 to the stop. Pg Marítim-Almirall Cervera + 2 min walk
Helpful information:
- the cost of renting sunbeds and umbrellas is 10€ each;
- glass of sangria from a nearby bar – 5€
Inexpensive tours to Barcelona can be found online on the largest websites and. They cooperate with 120 trusted tour operators and find the most profitable ones among all available offers. Therefore, you should look for the lowest prices from them.
- The beach of San Sebastia is well maintained: it truly deserves the Blue Flag. The sand is fine and pleasant, without any debris. Thanks to its location - in a cozy bay - the water in the sea is clean and bright.
- The territory is wide and long (only Bogatell is longer), so it copes with the constant flow of vacationers - there is enough space for everyone.
- It is quiet and peaceful here: merchants do not bother you. Even this quality alone makes San Sebastia worthy of the category of the best beaches in Spain!
- Most of the audience are local (adequate) residents. Everyone does their own thing - sunbathing, swimming, playing sports. The atmosphere is light and truly relaxing.
- The location is convenient, less than a kilometer from Barceloneta; Not far away is the famous Barcelona Aquarium. Easily recognizable by the W Barcelona sail hotel.
- For those who like to bask in the sun topless, there is a separate area.
There is nothing to complain about in the level of equipment. All conditions have been created for a comfortable stay by the sea, except that there is a lack of safes for valuables and, possibly, entertainment. There is plenty of room for children to play, while adults can surf the Internet or go to a surfing and swimming school.
How to get there:
- by bus – V15, 39 to the stop. Pg Joan De Borbó - Pl Del Mar + 2 min walk
Helpful information:
- umbrella and sun lounger rental – standard 10€
We got here by pure chance, getting off at the Barceloneta metro station and turning off the road leading to the beach of the same name. And honestly, this place was like a balm for our beach heartstrings, tormented by the horrors of the first day.
San Miguel is located between Barceloneta and San Sebastia and therefore “absorbed” several negative aspects from the first and, fortunately, a lot of advantages from the second.
- The sand is impeccably clean, the sea is turquoise and it is very comfortable to enter it. The beach, by the way, shares one Blue Flag with San Sebastia.
- It is also located in the center, in a nice area. On the way from the metro, you can admire the yachts, boats, and boats of any degree of luxury moored in the harbor.
- Good organization of a standard set of services on the beach; there are also bike rentals and a couple of interesting restaurants
Among the points with a minus sign are the crowd of tourists and loud-voiced (but rare) massage gurus. However, compared to Barceloneta, even this situation is much better here!
Since there are few bars on site, the beach is relatively quiet. By the way, tourist advice suggests that it is worth going to San Miguel with children. Shallow water and sufficient space for making Easter cakes make it easier to relax with a child.
How to get there:
- by metro – line L4 to station. Barceloneta +12 min walk
- by bus – V15, 39 to the stop. Pg Joan De Borbó-Almirall Aixada + 5 min walk
by bus – 45 to the stop. Almirall Cervera + 5 min walk
Helpful information:
- sun loungers with umbrellas and here for 10€
It is 700 meters of sandy strip, equipped to the highest level. Renovated for the 1992 Olympics, Bogatell Beach in Barcelona is considered one of the world's premier seaside destinations for several reasons.
- The beach is cleaned daily, and the less massive flow of tourists affects the amount of garbage left behind.
- The sea water is cleaner. Until the waves come :)
- Bogatel regularly receives the Blue Flag award, i.e. confirms compliance with quality standards year after year.
- Adapted to any category of tourists: from lazy lovers of sunbathing to restless kids.
- Has all the conditions for people with disabilities
Bogatell is one of the most popular non-tourist beaches in Barcelona. Due to the distance from the center, as can be seen on the map, people do not have the patience to get to the location. But finding a free seat at noon is still difficult. Reviews from tourists note that the atmosphere is friendly, calm, and there are no annoying cola and massage vendors.
The entrance to the sea is smooth. Showers, toilets, drinking fountains and lockers for valuables are of course available. Tanned Catalan lifeguards monitor the situation from their towers and shout at particularly angry swimmers behind the buoys through a loudspeaker.
For fans of sports and outdoor games, there are basketball hoops, volleyball nets, ping-pong tables, and even an area for kicking a ball. For children there is a playground. We also took care of the couch potatoes: you can rent a sun lounger and an umbrella, buy a mojito at the nearest bar and post photos from the scene on Instagram - the Wi-Fi is excellent.
How to get there:
- by metro – line L4 to station. Llacuna + 15 minutes walk
- by bus – H16 to the stop. Pg Calvell - Rambla Del Poblenou + 7 min walk
by bus – 59 to the stop. Cementiri De L'Est - Carmen Amaya + 9 min walk
Helpful information:
- price for renting an umbrella or sun lounger – 8-10€
Somorrostro is located next door to Barceloneta, so if Barcelona's main beach surprises you, moving here is a good option.
Here, as on all the beaches of the city, a standard set of services is provided. On the border with Barceloneta there are areas for sports, in the middle there is a beach library and a volleyball court, closer to Nova Icaria there is a surf school, boat and catamaran rental. Wi-Fi reception is weak. What distinguishes it from other places is the presence of an information center, the Center de la Platja, which in the summer organizes excursions, lectures, performances on the history of the Barcelona coast, and also lends shovels and buckets for children. However, the beach is not that calm. A line of the coolest clubs and restaurants in the city lined up along it, which explains the lion's share of young people hanging out in Somorrostro day and night. How to get there:
Helpful information:
Levant is a typical Barcelona city beach, not at all touristy, and therefore calm and “homey”. Few travelers living in the city center make it to the beach, or even know about it. But for some reason it is still full of people, especially in the summer months.
Other advantages include amenities (outdoor showers, toilets, rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, Wi-Fi), adaptation to people with disabilities, conditions for beach volleyball and surfing. There are problems with the entrance to the sea, it is not quite flat, and quite large stones come across under your feet. How to get there:
Helpful information:
Nova Icaria is a controversial place. Like other beaches, it is well equipped, the scenery is pretty, there are a lot of cafes and entertainment. But for every plus there is a minus.
There are a lot of children running around Nova Icaria, and families like the beach. Probably due to the convenient entrance to the water, it is smooth and long, and there is clean sand on the coast. In addition, there is a fun children's playground and animation. For adults - volleyball, tennis or Wi-Fi. How to get there:
Helpful information:
An unconventional look at beach holiday destinations in Barcelona, but, nevertheless, this area is classified as a beach. It is a huge sea pool, fenced with mounds of boulders, which, by the way, protect from waves, but not from debris. Entrance to the water is via a wide staircase, with handrails and a smooth descent. The place is well equipped for people with disabilities. Of course, there is no sand here; instead, people sunbathe on wooden flooring. There are enough visitors. Shower, toilet - everything is provided; You can go water skiing and jump from a makeshift pier. How to get there:

Map of Barcelona beaches For a real beach holiday - with children, couples, alone, with parents - they go not to the capital of Catalonia itself, but to resorts located on neighboring coasts. The map shows that the beaches of Spain, especially in its eastern part, are almost continuous. Not all of them are identical, as in Barcelona. Somewhere there are sandy beaches, with white or golden sand, and somewhere it turns into small pebbles. In the south, Barcelona borders the Costa Dorada, with its center in the city of Salou. Without exaggeration, some of the best beaches in Spain are concentrated here. For families, the Central, or Main, beach of Salou and Playa Ponente is suitable; for a friendly company - Capellan Bay. By the way, white beaches in Spain can be found not only in Mallorca, but also in the town of La Pineda, neighboring Salou. Excellent beaches near Barcelona are also located in the north of the city. The coastline of the resorts of Calella and Pineda de Mar, with golden spits and turquoise waters, will fit perfectly into the feed of any travel blogger. 🙂 The port where we took a yacht excursion with friends Beaches of the Costa BravaThe pearl of the coast north of the Catalan capital is, of course, Lloret de Mar. Places for relaxation by the sea here are great - from wide public beaches (Lloret beach), where both locals and tourists have fun, to uncrowded picturesque corners surrounded by greenery (Santa Cristina beach, Sa Boadella). The sand also comes in any color - white, gold, gray, and its texture cannot be determined - either large grains of sand, or the smallest pebbles. 🙂 NH Hesperia Barcelona del Mar 4* Copying of materials is permitted only with the obligatory indication of a direct, active and indexable hyperlink to the site. |

When they tell you Spain, you immediately start thinking: sea, sun and Barcelona! Yes, it is in Barcelona that the main flow of tourists to Spain is concentrated. But there are almost no holiday resorts in the city itself. After all, this is a big city, not a resort town. The main vacationers at the resorts are the “golden” youth, people with above-average income and celebrities.

And where to live, again, you choose for yourself:
Vilyanova and La Geltru;
Sitges;

About Barcelona as a place for resort and beach holidays
Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia, recently famous for its desire to become an independent state. Catalonia is autonomous, but part of Spain. The province of Barcelona, part of the Catalan Autonomous Community, although it ranks 33rd in territory, is second in population among all 50 Spanish provinces.
Additional Information! Most recently, in 2017, the province of Barcelona received a certificate of responsible tourism and was recognized as a biosphere destination. The popularity of the resort area and Barcelona's seaside resorts is evidenced by the consistently high flow of tourists. Last year, slightly fewer vacationers came here than the total number of local residents who live here permanently.
In the Catalan Autonomous Community of resort towns there is a huge variety: the settlements of the Costa del Garraf, according to reviews - expensive and noisy, the Costa del Maresme - the “fruit coast” and the Costa Brava, where the most popular cities close to Barcelona are located - Lloret de Mar and Blanes .
Resorts near Barcelona are a scattering of pearls, among which, like an expensive necklace, it is difficult to choose the most beautiful one. Barcelona is a fairy tale city that every inhabitant of the Earth has heard of, with unforgettable sights and a unique flavor.
Beach holidays in Spain
L the best resorts near Barcelona and the sea
Each resort city is unique in its own way and can bring a person the most unforgettable memories in his life. The subtlety of the choice: an area that is not crowded or noisy, that satisfies any needs, a family vacation or a cheerful, riotous and most memorable one, is determined in the same way as a place for permanent residence.
Some people want to go to a huge city with a lot of attractions and places of entertainment, while others live in one constantly, looking for peace, quiet and relaxation. Fortunately, among the resorts near Barcelona you can choose an excellent comfort zone for any, even the most whimsical taste:
- Blanes, from which the drive to the capital takes no more than an hour, is full of historical attractions: Gothic fountains, medieval churches and basilicas, it has the ruins of Cabrera Castle and unique historical buildings. For nature lovers, there are botanical gardens and parrot and dolphin shows in nearby Santa Susanna. The beaches in Blanes are pebbly, but there are many of them, each with its own infrastructure. And shopping lovers can spend several days in the resort’s shops and still won’t be able to see everything.
- Lloret del Mar- one of the most popular places, a Barcelona hit, which even those who relax away from crowded places strive to get to. Here are generally recognized as the best beaches, and not far from Barcelona, of which tourists have fabulous memories. The coastal zone is protected from winds and pollution by cliffs and rocks, the water is clean and sand does not stick to the skin. The Cat Museum and the Dwarf Park are useful for hiking with children, the Sant Joan Castle is intact and maintained in excellent condition, and the modernist cemetery is a completely unique place in terms of color.
- Tarragona– a unique historical symbiosis of cultural achievements and a high level of service culture. For history buffs, there are a huge number of historical monuments here. Those who are looking for peace and serenity can be addressed here without a doubt. This is another treasured spot for the world's water sports enthusiasts, but the beaches here are well equipped and do not interfere with ordinary sunbathers. In the vicinity of Tarragona there are unique attractions of Spanish Rome; the city itself whimsically combines museums: archaeological, Roman, ancient weapons and modern art.
- La Pineda is already located 100 km from Barcelona, but this is a ridiculous distance at modern speeds. But it is located in the Costa Dorada and is considered an ideal place for families with children. No Disneyland can compare with its shallow beaches, numerous swimming pools, and the unique healing air produced by Mediterranean pine trees. This is the best beach option for solving the problem of choice, when you need to decide which resort is closer to Barcelona and which is more suitable for children, if the child is traveling with his parents.
Resorts in Spain near Barcelona
There is something to do here for fans of water activities, history buffs, and fans of carnival processions, festivals, and holidays. In addition, the famous Tarragona is only 13 km away and you can get there without any problems.
Note! The more you learn from a travel agency about the attractions of the province, the more difficult it becomes to make a choice. Therefore, you need to decide in favor of the main holiday, and you can get to Barcelona the city in any option that will certainly be offered at your place of choice.

The small town has everything to serve new arrivals at the highest level - from comfortable hotels to inexpensive apartments, travel agencies, and one of the cleanest beaches on the five-kilometer-long coast.

The best beaches near Barcelona
A person rests only for a short period of the year, but good memories make it much easier to endure long periods of work. Spain is an ideal place for an unforgettable holiday, with many beautiful corners to get an even Mediterranean tan and new experiences. A good example of this is the resorts near Barcelona. In the provinces you can relax with pleasure in cities from which you can get to the capital in a short time. But at the same time, experience all the delights of uncrowded streets, spiritual solitude and tranquility.
- Salou– 10 km from Tarragona and only 92 – from Barcelona, the capital of the Costa Dorada, one of the largest Spanish seaside resorts, with its long and endlessly interesting history, the glory of an ancient Greek port and a haven of pirates a little later, a huge amusement park to visit which one day is not enough.
- Cambrils, with beaches 10 km long, and only 100 km from Barcelona, famous for its intimacy, endless convenience, many convenient little things - hotels, souvenir and fish shops, Watchtower and Port Tower, Vilafortuny Castle, built in the 12th century.
- Tossa de Mar, 104 km from Barcelona, where you can not only sunbathe on well-maintained beaches, but also enjoy relaxing in secluded bays, watching the beauty of the ebb and flow of the tide, and at the same time explore the Villa Vella fortress and the villas of the ancient Romans.
When choosing a holiday destination in the province of Barcelona or in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, it is impossible to make the wrong choice. Here everything is located nearby and, if desired, you can explore a lot, but also enjoy your vacation to the fullest.
Don't try to see everything at once. Think carefully and choose the most interesting. Tourist service in Spain is at the highest level, so you can go on an organized excursion and eat inexpensively and comfortably. The main thing is to know what exactly is needed. And to do this, you can try to carefully study tourist brochures, information on the Internet, and offers from travel agencies with a solid reputation at home.
It is impossible to give definitive advice when talking about the best resorts near Barcelona. The province has many such cities with a long history; all that remains is to make a choice in favor of one of the many resorts near Barcelona.
Even while relaxing at a resort, relaxing on the beach and indulging in entertainment, any tourist dreams of getting there and seeing it with his own eyes. Communication from remote areas of the coast is not always perfect, so it is better to make the choice consciously, and give preference not just to cities from which it is easier and more convenient to get to the capital. It is better to choose those that are quite comfortable and interesting in themselves.
They began to develop as places for mass recreation for city residents quite recently, when tanning became fashionable. Now all 4.5 kilometers of Barcelona beaches are maintained in excellent condition all year round.
For the first time, conditions for a beach holiday were created in Barcelona in second halfXX century. At that time, trips to the sea took a lot of time, since the city had not yet grown to its current size and public transport in the coastal area was poorly developed. Barcelona gave a huge impetus to the development of the coastal area 1992 Olympics, in preparation for which water-polluting production was removed, several more remote beaches were “cultivated”, the railway was moved and a single embankment was formed.
