) is located in the intermountain basin of the Plessur valley (Plessur, Schanfigg) 32 km southeast of Chur.

The resort began its development in 1883, when Dr. Otto Erwig-Hold, on one of his ski trips in the mountains south of Chur, came across an isolated and very picturesque village. Having appreciated its location and the peculiarities of the local microclimate (lying in the bowl of a deep valley, Arosa practically does not experience strong winds, although it itself is located at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level), as well as three picturesque lakes, the doctor began to recommend his friends to visit here . Within 10 years, several hotels stood in Arosa (in fairness, it should be noted that the first of them appeared long before - in 1878), and Arthur Conan Doyle, who visited here in 1894, literally glorifies the young resort, publishing an article in Ski magazine. Since then, Arosa has become one of the most famous mountain centers in Switzerland, and although it is clearly not on the scale of Davos or St. Moritz, its popularity as a mountain climatic center is very great.

The village of Arosa itself consists of two areas: the main resort area Ausserarosa(Ausserarosa), grouped around the station and Lake Obersee, and the old village itself Innerosa(Innerarosa) at the upper end of the valley.

    Winter holidays in Arosa

Arosa is, rather, not even a ski resort, but simply a winter one. After all, the opportunities for recreation here are very different: alpine skiing and snowboarding, sledding (this entertainment is especially popular in the evenings, on illuminated trails), snowshoeing, horse-drawn cart rides, ice skating and much more. That is why the resort can have the status of a family resort: you can find a lot of ways to actively spend time in the fresh air, and all of them are suitable for both adults and children.

The Arosa ski area is relatively small, but very well located. The main routes stretch from the long northwestern ridge between the mountains Chirpen (2728 m), Weisshorn (2653 m) and Bruggerhorn (2467 m), ending almost in residential areas. In total there are about 50 marked ski slopes ("green" - 35%, "blue" - 50%, "red" - 15%, no "black", but from time to time the descent from Weisshorn to the Karmenahutte shelter is included in this category) south -eastern exposure, but thanks to the special microclimate there is almost always snow on them. Even despite the fact that this is one of the sunniest places in the country. The slopes in general are not long (the longest is 6 km) and cannot boast of complex terrain, but the resort is clearly aimed at beginners and family vacations, and the slopes themselves are always carefully prepared and have a large width.

However, there is a good freeride area between the Weisshorn and Bruggerhorn peaks, and the chaos of peaks on the opposite side of the valley, around Mount Strehl (2674 m), provides ample opportunities for off-piste skiing and heli-skiing (the off-piste area is rated at 40-50 km). But in general, the resort is clearly aimed at less experienced skiers, so these slopes are often empty. There are 16 lifts with a total capacity of about 22 thousand people per hour.

There are also 25 km of cross-country skiing, a magnificent snowpark with a half-pipe at the Tschuggen Observatory (Tschuggen, altitude 2000 m), about 40 km of winter hiking routes (summer - three times more), 2 toboggan runs, and the Micky Mouse Alpine ski club. Club, outdoor and indoor skating rinks (they even have their own hockey team!), curling club, equestrian center, salt water swimming pool, several tennis and squash courts, paragliding club, large spa complex at the Arosa Kulm hotel, large wellness center in the Grand Hotel Tschuggen, a fitness center and several health centers with saunas, jacuzzi, massage rooms and so on. And in Innerosa there is the Alte Kirche church, built at the end of the 15th century, which is the hallmark of the resort.

Since 2013, the resorts of Arosa and Lenzerheide have been united into one ski region, which in terms of the length of the slopes will be among the most extensive in Switzerland and will become the largest in the canton of Grisons. The 1.7-kilometer-long pendulum cable car will stretch across the Urdental valley without a single support and will become the key transport structure of this system. The newest Hoernli ski lift will stretch from Arosa into the mountains, which will become one of the links in the system connecting the two ski areas. In addition, two new six-chair cable cars will be built in Lenzerheide: Heimberg-Mottahuette and Mottahuette-Urdenfuerggli. And a new restaurant will open at the intermediate station of Scharmoin.

    Hotels and spa in Arosa

There are a lot of hotels in the resort and for every taste. Wealthy tourists can choose one of the 4-star hotels (BelArosa, Blatter's Bellavista, Cristallo, Excelsior, Posthotel, Pratschli, Sporthotel Valsana, Sunstar Parkhotel, Waldhotel National) - almost all of them are located in close proximity to the ski slopes. 2- and There are also a lot of 3-star hotels in the city of Arosa. Finally, if you wish, you can book private apartments with several bedrooms and a kitchen. For those traveling with small children, travel agencies can recommend one of the hotels included in the Alpen Club Micky Maus chain, where children's holidays are treated with particular care, and where you can easily leave children for a few hours during the day when parents want to ride in the mountains or go for a walk. However, if financial well-being allows you to make your holiday ideal, you should choose the best hotel in the Arosa resort - Tschuggen Grand Hotel .

    Summer holidays in Arosa

The mountain resort of Arosa is good not only in winter, but also in summer. A comfortable Swiss holiday can be diversified by hiking and horseback riding in the mountains - there are about 200 km of roads for walking in total. Guests of each hotel in Arosa are issued an Arosa Card for free use of the ski lifts, which also operate in the summer and take tourists to the ski heights, where they can have a picnic and from where, if desired, they can descend on foot. In summer there are also children's club hotels. Adults will appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, the opportunity to undergo several rejuvenating treatments at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel spa and a wide selection of excellent restaurants serving Swiss cuisine.

    Arosa infrastructure

There are many shops, restaurants (more than 50), bars (23), nightclubs, there is even a cinema, a museum, a post office and a public library, as well as a casino on Poststrasse. There are about 8,000 beds in 60 hotels (including 2 5-star categories) and apartments located almost near the highways.

In general, the resort can hardly be classified as cheap, although the prices for accommodation here are somewhat lower than in St. Moritz. In a five-star hotel, it is simply unrealistic to expect less than 400 euros per day per night in winter (apartments - 300-350 euros per day per person). Therefore, it is quite possible to stay in the capital of the canton - Cure (32 km from Arosa), where hotel prices are noticeably lower.

The cost of a one-day ski pass in the Arosa zone during the season is 20-41 francs for a child and 61 francs for an adult, a six-day one - 95-180 and 284 francs, respectively (photo required). There is a whole system of discounts and special offers, as well as a special guest card Arosa Card (13 francs per day), which provides free access to a number of sports and entertainment facilities of the resort, the Schanfigger history museum, travel on the Hornli and Arosa-Weisshorn cable cars, as well as local buses .

    Seasons in Arosa

The ski season lasts from early December to mid-April. A characteristic feature of the resort is the fact that from mid-April to mid-June and from mid-October to mid-December, almost everything is closed - shops, hotels, sports centers, hiking trails and ski lifts.

    Transport in Arosa

An express bus runs regularly along the main road throughout the Arosa resort. During the day, he works completely free of charge, transporting tourists from hotels to ski lifts, numerous shops and favorite restaurants. In the evening and at night, the bus driver charges passengers a low fare.

Please note that after midnight and until 6 am, travel through the city of Arosa by private vehicles is prohibited. This is done in order to maintain resort comfort and peace. So nightlife lovers, returning to the hotel from a disco or restaurant, have to wait for an express bus or catch a taxi.

    How to get to Arosa

You can get to Arosa from (170 km) by train via. This route in itself can be considered a special attraction of the resort - along its entire length from the cantonal capital to Arosa (32 km), the Arosa Bahn (RhB) train passes by the most beautiful places of Chur itself (including the Obertor Gate and the Maltese Tower), then through 244 (!!) hills and 360 turns it rises to 1320 meters, and then crosses the valley along the famous 284-meter-long “aerial viaduct” at Langwies. It’s easy to guess how beautiful the landscapes are from the train window (travel time is 45-50 minutes) and why more than 600 thousand people travel this route every year.

You can get there from Chur by road, but it should be borne in mind that the ascent along the road is quite tedious - Chur lies at an altitude of 584 meters, Arosa - 1800 meters, and the highway itself is narrow and makes as many as 365 turns along its 35-kilometer length! Therefore, the journey takes at least an hour. In addition, movement in private cars within Arosa is prohibited from midnight to 6.00. But all buses within the village are free, which leads to the fact that the ski buses are often very crowded.

    Arosa Alpine skiing

The opening of the joint ski area "Arosa - Lenzerheide" took place in 2013. The two resorts have connected their pistes with a lift, making 225 km of pistes available to vacationers. More than 40 million Swiss francs were invested in the construction of two chairlifts and a cabin, as well as the creation of the necessary infrastructure.

The new region has become the second longest piste in the canton of Graubünden (after the Flims-Laax-Falera region, which offers 235 km of total pistes). Other regions of Graubünden, in particular St. Moritz and Davos, also boast large ski areas (350 km at St. Moritz, 310 km at Davos), however, in these resorts the slopes are not fully connected by ski lifts; to move between areas you need use the bus or train. The new Arosa and Lenzerheide ski pass includes travel from Chur, the cantonal capital, to Arosa (by RhB train) or to Lenzerheide (by bus).

Arosa is considered one of the sunniest resorts in Switzerland: the town is located at an altitude of 1800 meters in a valley protected from the cold wind. Excellent hotels with SPA centers and everything necessary to recuperate, hiking trails and a variety of sports activities - not only skiers and snowboarders come to Arosa. Romantic walks around the picturesque Obersee lake, good shopping, a large selection of hotels - it is no coincidence that Arosa is considered an excellent family resort. Every week the resort offers a variety of events and entertainment, especially for families with children (free for all holidaymakers). Beginner skiers most often learn to ski at the top of Tschuggen, where the simple trails are concentrated. Blue runs are also located along the Plattenhorn lift. Intermediate skiers will appreciate the long pistes leading from Hornli, while experts will enjoy the fairly steep slopes of Weisshorn (2653m) and the black piste from Carmennahutte. For expert skiing, the Lenzerheide circuit is much more interesting - this resort often hosts World Cup finals. The most difficult descent in the region is the famous Silvano Beltrametti slope: this is the steepest women's downhill course in the world (located in the Parpan area, length 2.45 m, maximum gradient 65%.
