    27.01.2024

If this is not the first time you are vacationing on the Costa Brava and have already visited such famous places as the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueres, Barcelona, Girona, Rupit and Besalu, and you want something “non-pop,” this article may be useful to you. Our starting point will be one of the most popular resorts on the Costa Brava - Lloret de Mar.

Let us immediately note that there are no organized buses with guides going to these places; you can get there by private car, take an individual transfer with a driver, or rent a car. There are many car rental companies in Lloret: Europcar, Fauria, Rent-a-car and Olimpia (they have Russian-speaking employees). The price will depend on the season, brand and size of the car.

So, we’ll tell you about several places where the tourist flow is small and where you can have a cozy lunch in a real Catalan family cafe, and also enjoy fantastic views of the Pyrenees, lakes, hills and valleys.

    City of Banyoles

    • Travel time from Lloret de Mar to Banyoles takes about 40 minutes (60 km), along the AP-7 highway.

Everything here is conducive to family walks: maple alleys create a pleasant coolness, geese and swans swim on the lake, and at certain times of the year you can see very small ducklings. Thanks to the presence of the lake, it is considered a world center for sports water rowing; athletes train here all year round, and international competitions are also held here.

    Recreation and entertainment

You can walk here all day with your family and even small children; the road is convenient enough for a stroller to pass. Often on weekends, master classes and events for children are held here; you can follow the information on the reserve’s website. The most amazing attractions are the waterfalls and caves.

Barcelona is the most vibrant and famous landmark of Catalonia. However, the region is not only famous for this city. Let's get acquainted with the iconic cultural and historical objects of the autonomy.

    Montserrat

Catalans are not as fanatically committed to Catholicism as, for example, the inhabitants of Andalusia. However, Christian traditions are honored here, and one of the most revered religious shrines is the mountain monastery of Montserrat, located 40 kilometers from the Catalan capital. This is the “spiritual center” of autonomy.

Sights of Catalonia - Montserrat Monastery

The monastery belongs to the Benedictine order. Its oldest building, the basilica, dates back to the 16th century. The most important shrine is the image of the Madonna of La Moreneta. According to legend, it was written by the Evangelist Luke himself, but scientific research shows that the date of creation of the masterpiece should be considered the 12th century.

The Madonna of La Moreneta is the patron saint of Catalonia, every resident of the region reveres her, and every true believer dreams of touching her image.

It is for this reason that the folk trail in Montserrat will never be overgrown. However, there is also an amazing monastery boys’ choir.

    Cities of Catalonia

Girona and Figueres are two amazing Catalan cities: each with its own history, architecture, and character. They can be recommended for visiting to those who believe that they end with the outskirts of Barcelona.

    Girona

Ancient Girona arose on the site of the Roman settlement of Gerunda, designed to defend Via Augusta, the most important road in Iberia, connecting Seville with Rome.

Sights of Catalonia - the city of Girona

Unfortunately, to this day, all that remains of this road are memories and a narrow street.

Today's Girona is a quiet, cozy city, although it is the capital of the province of the same name. The Onyar River divides Girona into two parts. On the left, hilly bank there is a historical center recommended for visiting, on the right - an ordinary modern Catalan city.

    Figueros

Figueros is interesting to others. This city is home to the most famous theater-museum of Salvador Dali. Once upon a time, an agreement was reached between the artist and the municipality that the museum would open in the building of the old theater, which happened in 1974. Since then, admirers of the genius have literally besieged this landmark.

As for Figueros itself, it is a city of cosmopolitans and gourmets. One of its brightest traditions is the weekly market on the main square. It has been held every Thursday since the distant year 1267.

    Lleida

According to many, this is the most beautiful province of the autonomy. By the way, she is also called Lleida.

Natural objects attract attention here: mountain rivers, lakes with clear water, waterfalls, orange rocks, and mysterious cliffs. It is no coincidence that experienced travelers compare Lleida with the Grand Canyon.

The province has a well-developed sports and tourism infrastructure: hotels, campsites, bases with rental equipment for fishing. Water rodeo and freestyle competitions are held here.

The capital of the province is the city of Lleida. The main attraction is the Seu Vella Cathedral. Its walls are made in the Romanesque style, and the vaults were built according to Gothic canons. The cathedral stands on a hill, occupying a dominant position in relation to the rest of the city.

    Castles of Catalonia

There are also such attractions in Catalonia.

    Parks

Catalonia is also famous for its natural parks. The most famous among them is Sant Llorenc de Munt, located in Monsen. UNESCO awarded it the honorary title of a biosphere reserve.

The Sera d'Aubac park is also popular. It is located in a mountainous, rugged area, famous for its steep, steep cliffs.

There are also many parks and reserves with typical Mediterranean flora and fauna. You won't have to look for them for long. Most likely, they will be close to you, because Catalonia is a “green” region.

Catalonia is an autonomous community in northeastern Spain on the border with France.

    Photo: Architecture of Catalonia

Catalonia is a unique Spanish region. Moreover, its residents may be seriously upset if they are called Spaniards and not Catalans. And there are many reasons for this. The spirit of freedom is in the blood of the Catalans. Many generations have strived for it and, finally, the dream has practically come true - broad autonomy has been obtained.

Watch the beautiful views of Catalonia in this video:

Catalonia is very different from neighboring regions of Spain. Thousands of people do not gather here for bullfights or passionate flamenco, but prefer the calmer Sardana dance, drink cava sparkling wine, celebrate other holidays and speak their own language - Catalan.

    Photo: Beautiful places in Catalonia

In summer, Catalonia attracts with the best beaches on the Mediterranean coast, and in winter it invites you to go skiing at the famous ski resorts.

On August 15, all residents and guests of the city of Salou are delighted with the Golden Nights festival (Les Nits Daurades), when thousands of salutes and fireworks are launched into the sky in the evenings.

On September 15-24, the Santa Tecla festival is held in Tarragona in honor of the city. And on the streets, in addition to other special events, real castles of people are built.

    Geographical features

    Photo: Costa del Garraf

In Catalonia you can find a wide variety of landscapes. In the north are the peaks of the Pyrenees, amazing mountain ranges, as well as valleys, pine forests and clear lakes. In the center are fertile, rolling plains where wheat is heading. In the southwest the climate is drier, but vineyards, olive and orchards thrive on these plains.

The coast is the real pride of Catalonia:

    1. Costa Brava (trans. rocky coast) is a coast with hills covered in pine trees and beautiful cliffs. The main party town is Lloret de Mar, and Tossa de Mar attracts with the ruins of ancient Rome and airplane flights;

    Climate

Coastal Catalonia has a wonderful temperate climate - in summer up to +30°C, without rain, in winter an average of +8-9°C. But the further from the coast, the colder the winter and the hotter the summer. The mountains have an alpine climate, where summers are cool and winters are snowy.

How to get to Catalonia and get around locally

There are three airports in Catalonia: El Prat in Barcelona, Girona and Reus in Tarragona.

A flight from Moscow to Barcelona costs 230 euros with a transfer and 350 euros direct. Tickets from St. Petersburg are more expensive - 270 euros with a transfer and from 900 euros without connections.

A Schengen visa is required to visit Spain. You can obtain it yourself at the Spanish visa center when submitting a set of required documents. As a rule, a multiple visa is placed in the passport for a year or two.

To travel throughout the region with stops in different cities, we recommend renting a car: it is more convenient and even more cost-effective than adapting to public transport and its schedule.

For those who decide to live permanently in Barcelona and make forays into other villages, then in addition to renting a car, you should pay attention to four routes around Catalonia from the Catalunya Bus Turístic company. Cultural characteristics

Photo: Construction of towers from people

Catalans are a proud and self-confident people who value their autonomous status given their advantageous location and Barcelona's cultural treasures. The Catalans themselves like to describe themselves as “wisdom and impulsiveness,” and their emblem is the “Catalan donkey,” which contrasts so much with the Spanish “bull.” This region gave birth to such geniuses of the brush as the surrealist Dali and the abstract artists Miró and Tapies. They use their own Catalan language, which was banned under Franco.

Catalonia has always been ahead of neighboring regions in economic development, but authentic fishing villages have still been preserved.

The Catalans also came up with their own entertainment - building towers of people at all fiestas. The towers sometimes reach seven tiers and are crowned with brave children. Well, others dance the folk dance - sardana, accompanied by a kobla orchestra, where the double bass sets the tone.

    Where to buy?

    Photo: Shopping in Catalonia

Girona has its own shopping street, Rambla, where the largest shopping centers and shops are concentrated.

Tarragona has a large Central Market. Now the main building is closed for reconstruction, as it is already more than a hundred years old, and all trade is carried out in the adjacent premises.

The freshest catch is brought to the fish market in Blanes every morning. Trading is carried out only until noon.

There is also a mobile clothing fair that travels throughout Catalonia, which appears in one of the towns once a week, and then moves to the next place, and so on throughout the holiday season. The assortment there is simple - T-shirts, jeans, dresses. They are inexpensive, but the quality is not like from boutiques.

    Prices

In Spain, all prices are quoted in euros. We recommend exchanging currency in advance before your trip to get a much better rate.

Lunch in an inexpensive cafe costs 15-18 euros. You can find great deals on the “menu del dia” - then lunch will cost 8-10 euros per person.

Drinking coffee in a cafe costs about 1.5 euros.

    Bread – 0.60 euros

    Milk 1l – 0.70 euro

    Chicken 1 kg – 5.60 euros

    Tomatoes 1 kg – 1.70 euros

An overnight stay in a three-star hotel costs about 30-35 euros. There are small hostels where you can spend the night for 17-20 euros.

Taking a taxi is quite expensive. One trip will cost an average of 10-15 euros, depending on the duration of the trip.

Souvenirs cost differently: magnets for 1 euro and expensive knives for 40-50 euros.

An entrance ticket to the museum costs on average 5-10 euros, and on some days admission is free.

The average budget for one day of travel, taking into account accommodation, food and sightseeing, is 100-120 euros.

Attractions of Catalonia on the map

This is the most famous creation of the great Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. He himself drew up a project and began to build the temple, but sudden death prevented the construction from being completed. Construction continues today, and the temple has already been included in the UNESCO list.

The Sagrada Familia is a functioning Catholic cathedral; church services are held there regularly. Tourists come to this world-famous long-term construction site every day on excursions to admire its divine beauty.

In recent years, Antonio Gaudi lived here in a small room, here he drew up drawings and sketches of the future temple. The grave of the great architect is also located here. Many come here to admire his talent and hard work.

This is the most famous pilgrimage center, located near the mountains of the same name in Catalonia. The monastery itself is located in the mountains, at an altitude of over 700 meters, 50 km from Barcelona. Today the area around it is declared a national park.

Any person can come to these beautiful and holy places to repent of their sins in church, take part in masses, pray, approach the statue of the Madonna, and then descend into the world with a clear conscience.

A museum dedicated to the great artist is located in the city of Figares. It displays Dali's paintings, which he left as a legacy to the Gala Foundation. This museum was a theater at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, but it was burned down during the Civil War.

Salvador Dali was personally involved in the transformation of the former theater into a museum, in one of the rooms of which today there is the artist’s grave. Today, the Dalí Museum in Catalonia ranks second in terms of attendance after the Prado Museum in Madrid.

This famous mansion in Barcelona was designed and built by Antoni Gaudi at the end of the 19th century, commissioned by Count Güell. For more than 30 years it has been under state protection and is on the famous UNESCO list.

Palace Güell is one of the first works of the great master; experts call this style Catalan Art Nouveau. But Gaudi’s hand is already visible: the ceiling in the house looks like a starry sky, the entrance is made for horse-drawn carriages, the interiors are rich and original.

The ancient Catalan village has now been restored and given over to tourists admiring the times of the Middle Ages. Local houses are built of gray stone and decorated with Arabic tiles. Around the houses there are tubs with ornamental plants.
