• Flights to Malta. A Brief History of the Battle of Malta

    13.08.2022

From Russia to Malta can be reached on foot, by car or by plane. There is no doubt that the first option belongs to the category of exotic, and the last one is the most optimal. Regular flights between the archipelago and two Russian cities - St. Petersburg and Moscow - are operated by Air Malta. This year, the number of flights from Russia has been increased, as the number of Russian tourists increased by a record 31% last year. A total of 32,000 Russians visited the archipelago.

In 2013, Air Malta celebrated its 40th anniversary - March 23, 1973 is considered the official day of its foundation. In 1999, regular flights to Moscow began, and in 2003 - to St. Petersburg. Over the past five years, serious steps have been taken to give the company a more modern and dynamic image. For this, the management system was reorganized and the staff was significantly reduced. All this made it possible to optimize costs and concentrate on the main function - the transportation of air passengers.

By 2008, the fleet renewal program was fully completed, and completely new Airbus aircraft entered service. The choice of liners from only one manufacturer has reduced maintenance costs. To date, the average age of aircraft is only 4.5 years. The fact that the liners have recently left the assembly line is visible to the naked eye. The fleet consists of seven Airbus A320-200s and five Airbus A319-111s. The company operates 100 flights per week, flying on 36 routes in Europe and North Africa.

At the beginning of last year, a series of projects aimed at rebranding the airline was launched, and already in September, at the international air show held in Malta, one could see the new look of the aircraft, which is distinguished by bright, cheerful, eye-catching coloring. Salons were equipped with new leather seats with increased distance between them, as well as information displays.

Among the strategic innovations, one can note the replacement of charter flights with regular flights on some routes. This, in particular, affected St. Petersburg, where for the last six years there have been only charter programs in the short summer period from the second half of June to early October. In this mode, about 2.5 thousand passengers were transported in this direction during the year. Since the summer of last year, according to the new policy of the company, regular flights have been connected to Malta and St. Petersburg. As a result, the number of passengers increased to 3.5 thousand, and the increase was 20. The transition to regular flights was due to the fact that an increasing number of passengers independently purchase tickets through the box office or use online booking. With the charter option, this was not possible, since the purchase of a tour package was a prerequisite, which, in addition to the flight, included accommodation, meals, etc.

Such changes gave impetus to the expansion of the program of regular flights to St. Petersburg and Moscow in 2013. From April 21 until the end of October, there will be two flights a week from St. Petersburg (on Wednesdays and Sundays on the A319 and A320 liners), and during the peak period - from July to September - the number of flights will increase to three. The third flight will be made on Sundays. From Moscow in April-May, four flights a week were carried out, and in the summer period there will be nine flights.

Starting this year, passengers have been given a choice between economy and business class, which was not the case last year and, especially, during the period of charter flights. Choosing a higher class of service will allow you to use the business lounge at the airport, expand the in-flight menu, and provide an opportunity for more comfortable seating in the cabin. The flight from St. Petersburg takes about 4 hours. On the way, passengers are offered in-flight meals, including a hot dish - sausage with beans and fried potatoes, as well as a muffin, a bun, butter, juice and tea or coffee. Quite enough to feel comfortable all the time of the flight. Thanks to the new strategic policy, it is expected that in 2013 Malta can receive about 40 tons

The most convenient way to get to the islands of Malta from Russia is by air. All convenient conditions have been created for tourists - regular flights, different price categories available to each social group. The advantages of air travel are obvious - it is time saving, confidence in the exact time of departure - arrival, the ability to pre-book tickets and comfortable conditions on the airliner!

How to get to Malta from Russia without transfers: prices and flight time

Regular flights to Malta are carried out from the capital of Russia, Moscow, as well as from the northern capital of St. Petersburg. Flights from these cities are direct and do not require transfers, which, based on savings calculations, is much cheaper. The length of such a flight from Moscow and St. Petersburg has almost the same duration and will be only 4 hours, and the return journey will take 3.5 hours. The minimum price of the road in both directions will cost from four hundred to five hundred euros. Flights are operated by Aeroflot and Air Malta, which provide passengers with the opportunity to choose the class they will fly in and other convenient services: online ticket booking, in-flight meals. Everything to make the flight unnoticeable and comfortable. In winter, the number of flights usually decreases, but flights do not stop at all.

How to get to Malta from Russia with transfers within the country: airlines and flight time

If it is not possible to choose a flight without transfers, then you can fly from other cities of Russia, just fly from any convenient city (for example, Rostov-on-Don, Perm, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar or Ufa) and get to the capital. Domestic flights across the country are carried out by Aeroflot, UTair, Rossiya Airlines and many others. The total flight time and its cost to Moscow or St. Petersburg depend on the remoteness of the city. From Rostov-on-Don, a flight to Moscow (1 hour 40 minutes), and then directly to Malta will take about 7 hours, excluding waiting times between flights. The flight from Tomsk will take even more time - to Moscow - 4 hours 30 minutes, and from Moscow to Malta - about 4.5 hours.

How to get to Malta from Russia through another country

Also, from Russia to Malta can be reached through another country. Such flights with transfers are often more profitable than direct flights from the capital of Russia, but they take more time. Malta has a convenient location, which allows you to get to the islands from any European country without problems and a lot of time loss. AlItalia Airlines flies from Moscow to Rome, the capital of Italy, where passengers will have to wait for a direct flight to Malta for about 2 hours. In general, the entire length of the flight will take up to ten hours. If you fly from Russia via Dubai, with Emirates airlines, the length of the trip will stretch for 15-16 hours. You can also fly to Vienna (Austrian Airlines) or Istanbul (Istanbul Airlines), the flight time will be 2 hours 10 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes from each country respectively. But a flight through Germany, using the services of Lufthansa, can be very profitable - these airlines are a partner of Malta Airlines and, very often, offer flights with favorable prices and conditions. Such flights will be beneficial if a tourist needs to get to one country or another, and later to Malta, because air tickets from Russia to Germany or the same Rome are not a cheap pleasure!

How to choose a profitable flight from Russia to Malta

If the tourist himself has not decided on the choice of a comfortable air flight, the Internet can come to the rescue. Many airlines have their own Internet sites that contain all the necessary information - cost, departure time and total flight time, you can immediately book tickets online. Also, you can contact the tour operator, or the airline, contact the operator by phone - the staff, taking into account all the wishes, will select the most profitable and convenient option that suits the client!

Malta - Island state. Most of the resorts are located on the two largest islands, one of which bears the same name Malta, and the second is called Gozo. I happened to visit both islands, and I will tell you how to get to them, but we will focus, of course, on the largest island of the Malta archipelago, since this is where the Maltese airport is located, and there are only two ways to get to the islands: either by air, or by water. However, at the end of the article I will make a small section specifically for those who travel by car.

By plane: air tickets, transfers, low-cost airline

Malta is one of the most popular and relatively inexpensive Mediterranean resorts, and therefore there are a lot of options to get there by air. In addition, despite the holiday season (traditionally the high season is from mid-June to the end of September), thanks to the large number of English schools, a large number of tourists and students fly there also in winter. This ensures the availability of regular flights from most European countries and from Russia all year round, although in the summer, of course, the number of flights to Malta increases significantly.

    Air flight from Russia

Regular flights from our country to Malta are carried out from the Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport by the Maltese airline AirMalta together with the Russian Aeroflot. Flight time 4 hours 20 minutes. Departures are carried out regardless of the season every Saturday and Sunday early in the morning. In mid-June, an additional flight appears on Wednesdays, which operates until the end of September. In any case, the exact schedule should be checked with the carrier in advance, as even regular flights sometimes change their schedule. The cost of tickets with a certain amount of luck starts from 130 EUR if you buy them in advance. I would recommend focusing more on 200-250 EUR one way if you plan to fly non-stop.

Also in the summer season there are charter flights to Malta. Such flights depart not only from Moscow, but also from other major Russian cities. It is best to clarify the availability and cost of tickets for charters in travel companies. Most often, such flights are paired with a ready-made tour, which already includes a hotel and airport transfer.

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from St. Petersburg, neither in the summer, during the season, nor at any other time of the year. So you can get from the northern capital only with transfers. The fastest and cheapest flights are offered by AirBaltic with a transfer in Riga and AirMalta with a connecting flight in Rome. The cost of such flights starts from 160 EUR. I also recommend paying attention to Turkish Airlines flights: a transfer in Istanbul can take 8-10 hours, but the cost is not very high (from 140 EUR)

    Transfer flight in Europe

It makes no sense to list in which cities in Europe you can make a transplant if you have planned your holiday in Malta. From almost any European state (most often from capital cities) there is at least one flight to the Maltese archipelago:, and any other. Choose according to the time of departure, the duration of the transfer and your preferences. Including there are flights from Istanbul, which usually turn out to be very favorable in terms of price. The cost of tickets, depending on the route and carriers, can vary from 200 to 500 EUR. for the selection of air tickets will help you design the best option.

However, such ticketing services do not take into account the flights of low-cost airlines, while one of the cheapest European air carriers, RyanAir, flies to Malta. And if you like to travel light, then this is a great option. RyanAir flies to Malta from more than ten different European cities, including Vilnius, which, for example, can be reached from St. Petersburg by bus. This will significantly save when planning a vacation or study in Malta. The cost of bus tickets - starts from 30 EUR. You can get from Moscow to Vilnius by train, which will cost you about 20 EUR. A RyanAir plane ticket from Vilnius to Malta will cost about 80 EUR without luggage, or much cheaper if you qualify for special discounts. A total one-way trip will cost you 100-120 EUR. The cost of a flight to Malta from other cities can be viewed on the carrier's website. Sometimes these are quite ridiculous figures like 15 EUR per flight.

There is also the option of combining a flight and a ferry. From Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, a direct flight of the Italian airline Alitalia flies to Catania, a city on the island, from where ferries go to Malta. Air tickets for this flight cost from 150 EUR. How to get to Malta by ferry, I'll tell you a little lower.

    Malta Airport

Malta has only one international airport. It is located in the municipality of Luqa. It is only five kilometers from the state capital of Valletta. In order to move around the island, you can take a taxi. Whichever city of Malta you go to, the cost of the trip will most likely be in the range of 20-30 EUR, even if you go very far, since the starting fare in a Maltese taxi is quite high.

If you haven't brought a dozen huge suitcases with you, I would recommend taking the bus. Malta has a well-developed bus network with very humane fares. The cost of one trip is from 2 EUR. For this money, you can transfer as many times as you like and change the route within two hours without paying anything extra. There are six routes from the airport around the island. They all start with the letter X: route X1 goes to Chirkeva, X2 to and so on. You can see more details about routes and fares.

    Ferry to Malta

I already mentioned above that ferries go to Malta from the Italian island. They go either from Catania or from Pozzallo. Flights are operated by Virtu Ferris. Sometimes it can be a combination of a bus from Catania to Pozzallo and a ferry from Pozzallo to Malta. Bus transfers are also organized by Virtu Ferris.

Travel time from Catania to Malta is 4.5 hours, from Pozzallo a little less than two hours. The duration of the trip may vary slightly due to weather conditions. By the way, keep this in mind in case you decide to return to Russia via Catania. If a ferry is delayed or even canceled due to a storm (this rarely happens in the Mediterranean, but still happens), you can lose your plane tickets. So it is better to take time with a margin. This is especially important to consider in winter. In summer, however, the sea is calmer.

As for the schedule of water transport, on weekdays there are two ferries connecting Malta and Pozzallo (in the morning and in the evening), on weekends there is only one (from Malta to Pozzallo in the morning, back in the evening). Connection with Catania - Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. For a more detailed schedule of ferries between Sicily and Malta, see.

Ferry ticket prices vary greatly depending on the season. In low season it can be as low as 60 EUR, while in high season the price can double or even more. The difference in ticket prices from Catania and from Pozzallo is small - only 12 EUR. Children's tickets are almost half the price.

In the high season, ferries to Malta from the Italian city of Salerno are sometimes allowed. Information can be clarified, for example,.

On the island of Malta itself, all ferries from Italy arrive at the port of the capital of the state, in Valletta. From the port you can walk to the central bus station of the island. I marked these two points on the map. It's hard to get lost there. There are signs everywhere.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk here, or you can drive two stops by bus. Landmark huge fountain Triton.

More than ten convenient routes leave from this central station throughout the island. About where to look at the schedule and the cost of bus tickets, I wrote above.

    Ferry to Gozo

Gozo is the second largest island in Malta. There is no airport on this island, so you can only get there by water, unless, of course, you are the happy owner of a personal small plane (a big one simply cannot land there due to the size of the island). Although five years ago helicopters flew from the Maltese Luqa airport to Gozo, they were abandoned, since the cost of the flight was very high, and apparently there were not so many who wanted to. Now a helicopter in Gozo can only be ordered privately.

Ferries to this small island depart from the Maltese port of Chirkeva. Ticket price 4.65 EUR for an adult passenger (cheaper at night - yes, ferries to Gozo also depart at night). If you are traveling with a car, the cost of the crossing will be 15.7 EUR. Ferries run every 30-40 minutes. For more information on how to get to the island of Gozo, how to get around the island and what to see there, read on our website.

    By car through Sicily

If you are traveling by car, you will need to get to the Italian island first. Depending on the chosen route, you have to overcome from 3900 kilometers or more. The net travel time is over forty hours. During this time, you will cross five or six European countries, where you will meet repeatedly toll roads, which you should be prepared for.

Since Sicily is also an island, you will find a ferry crossing from Villa San Giovane to the Sicilian city of Messina. Ferries leave every 15 minutes. Travel time 25-30 minutes. The cost of loading one car is from 40 EUR. It's impossible to get lost there. There are many signs in Villa San Giovane and the entire traffic flow also goes towards the port. In the port itself, specially trained people in uniform will show you where to buy a ticket, where to get off and where and when to go. Loading onto the ferry usually takes no more than 20 minutes.

When you get to Sicily, set the navigator to Pozzallo, from where you can already get back to Malta by ferry. By the way, in Pozzallo itself, the navigator will also come in handy for you, since there are not very good signs there, and the locals speak only Italian, and if they speak some other language other than Italian, then these are most likely not local, and where is the port they do not know. The cost of a water transfer car Sicily-Malta starts from 140 EUR (this figure also varies depending on the season and the size of the car).

And so you got on your car to Malta. I hope it will not come as a surprise to you that there is left-hand traffic here and even experienced drivers need several hours to change lanes. In addition, the traffic in Malta is very energetic. But that's no reason to give up. cool trip...

    Finally

Malta is not a very big country, but with an ancient history, wonderful climate and interesting nature. I recommend that you get to your hotel in the wonderful city of Valletta or the equally wonderful Sliema or St. Julians (or any other beautiful place) - do not stop there - explore the island and neighboring islands. Firstly, they deserve it, and secondly, it is so easy to do it with a convenient transport system Malta.

The tiny island nation of Malta is one of those European countries that our tourists have not yet had time to explore well. This tourist destination is now not as in demand as its European neighbors. Nevertheless, connoisseurs find this place amazing, so they can tell you with pleasure why they love the Maltese archipelago so much.

Malta is a small but very beautiful state with an amazing culture.

Of course, the main advantage of Malta is its g blue lagoons, warm Mediterranean waters and sunny beaches. The mild climate attracts a huge number of travelers. But not only beach lovers come here. Malta boasts countless historical and cultural monuments. They also come here to study specialized English schools in which the moderate cost of services is combined with a wide selection of quality educational programs. Yachtsmen, scuba divers and rock climbers can also find something to their liking here. Of course, the number of Russians who want to visit this amazing island is growing every year. For this reason, our compatriots are interested in how much to fly to Malta from Moscow by direct flight, as this is the most convenient and fastest way to visit the state.

As mentioned above, this direction is not very popular, so most of the flights on this route are carried out from Moscow. You can get to Malta without any delay with Air Malta. In this case, the flight will take only 4 hours 10 minutes.

Flight route from Moscow to Malta

It is worth noting that the return trip from Malta to Russia will take a little less time.

Regular flights in this direction are carried out only on Tuesdays and Saturdays. However, the summer season can please with three additional flights on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

    Flight with transfers

Not all travelers manage to adjust to the schedule of direct flights. In this case, connecting flights come to the aid of the tourist. In addition, it is no secret to anyone that it is travel with transfers that allows you to save a lot.

An important advantage of connecting flights is not only their favorable cost. The opportunity to see another country during a long transfer is highly appreciated, in which, in fact, all technical nuances will be settled.

Of course, most tourists are interested in the flight time Moscow - Malta, taking into account one or more transfers. Before the flight, you should definitely specify the duration of the docking in order to correctly plan your free time.

Traveling to Malta is a great way to hide from the Russian winter

Those who just want to save money and do not want to spend their time seeing any sights in other cities should count on the fact that the total flight time will be 6 hours 20 minutes. In this case, the transplant will take no more than an hour. This time is only enough to go through all the necessary instances: registration, inspection, etc.

The longest flight time Moscow - Malta includes three long transfers and is 50 hours 20 minutes.

In which cities are connections made?

The most popular cities for transfers are:

    • Istanbul;
    • London.

At the same time, depending on the chosen flight, the road through Istanbul may take from 5 to 21 hours. Docking in Rome is unlikely to allow you to enjoy the city, as it takes only an hour. But the transplant in London may last from 4 to 19 hours. There are other options for connecting routes with different durations, so before traveling, carefully study your ticket. So you can understand not only how much to fly to Malta from Moscow, but also how to spend time at transfer points with benefit.

    Malta airport

All international aircraft land at the state's only airport, located five kilometers from the country's capital, Valletta. The airport is named "Luke". It has a very modest size, but at the same time boasts a first-class level of service and modern infrastructure. Arriving tourists can find everything you need here, from ATMs to a telecommunications center and a post office.

Luqa Airport has well-established transport links with all the settlements of the island, so travelers do not have any problems getting to their resort.
